THE LEAD: GOP LAWMAKERS EYE SUCCESS ON TAX LEGISLATION

The House passed $1.5 trillion overhaul of Americans’ business and personal income taxes yesterday, setting President Trump and the Republicans on the path to their first major legislative triumph.

Passage of the bill “brought nearer the biggest revamp of the U.S. tax system in three decades,” according to the Associated Press.

A Senate version of the bill was approved late last night by the Finance Committee and sent to the full Senate. “Like the House measure,” reports the AP, ” it would slash the corporate tax rate and reduce personal income tax rates for many. But it adds a key feature not in the House version: repeal of the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that everyone in the U.S. have health insurance.”

Lots of eyes will be on Capitol Hill today to see if any Republicans vote against the measure, which some analysts say will result in a tax increase on middle class Americans in the near future.

The high-profile Democrat from Minnesota may be the subject of a Senate ethics panel investigation following accusations from television host Leeann Tweeden that he kissed and groped her in 2006, when he was a comedian.

The New York Times reports, “Mr. Franken issued an apology, but he faced criticism from fellow lawmakers, as well as from President Trump, who has himself been accused of harassment by several women.”

The Times offers a list of the prominent men, in government and beyond, who have recently been accused.

The Buckeyes joined rivals Michigan in shutting down its Greek social, recruitment and new member activities and are latest school to join a nationwide movement to crack down on hazing and alcohol consumption.

CNN reports that of the 37 fraternities that are part of OSU’s Interfraternity Council, “11 have been under investigation since the start of the school year for possible violations of the student code of conduct, Ohio State said. The majority of the cases involve ‘hazing and/or alcohol,’ a statement said. ‘This is an unacceptably high number, and the university will not tolerate behavior that puts the health and safety of students at risk,’ read a message sent to fraternity chapter presidents by the school’s director of Greek life, Ryan Lovell.”

27-year-old Jessica Marie Cross of Springdale, Maryland turned herself in to police officers yesterday for robbing a McDonald’s by squeezing through the drive-thru window. The surveillance camera video of the incident  was widely shared.

According to an Associated Press report, Cross made off with “$1,400 in cash, a purse, food and Happy Meal toys. Investigators say Cross is seen on video attempting to remove her fingerprints and disable the surveillance system.”
